What are the advantages and disadvantages of single sex schools?
I. Description of Problem or Issue:
Single sex education is a form of education that has many biased views and opinions. Our project will examine the different fields and views that single sex education presents. Throughout the project we researched the different types and purposes of single sex schools and how separating students based upon gender can help students flourish academically. As well as the role that sports play within single sex schools and how students develop socially.
II. Research Summary:
Chelsie’s Research: Throughout my research my focus was on the academic development of students who attend single sex schools or single sex classrooms in parallel education schools. While researching I was able to find many scholarly articles, journals and magazine articles pertaining to my focus. Some of the research I was able to find explained things that I myself did not even think about, such as the actual environment of the classroom and how it affects the way students learn. Specifically talking about the quality of the environment can help the academic achievements of each gender. My research also provided me with answers on how well students perform when placed solely with the same sex as well as how the motivation to pursue all classroom subjects increases.
Sam's Research: My research included the different types of single-sex schools, but predominantly focused on the different reasons for separating by gender in education. Much of the information I found revealed the obvious different types of single sex schools, or at least those that we see more frequently, such as religious and cultural schools. However, as I went on, I was surprised to find reasons for separation that are less readily thought of. Some of these reasons included a historical factor, such as a male institution refusing to change once women were allowed an education, or schools that were gender-separated on the account of blacks being given equal rights to education and the community wanting to avoid inter-racial dating, and never having changed since. I also came across ideas I hadn't thought of pertaining to single-sex schools, such as schools strictly for pregnant women, as well as many articles dissecting the rising trend of parallel education.
Ben's Research: My research focused on the athletics of single sex schools or single sex gym classes. In my research I found out that males and females participated higher and more vigorously in single sex gym classes. Girls are more likely to participate in there physical education class because they do not get distracted or embarrassed by the opposite sex. Also in other articles I noticed authors talking about the competitiveness of single sex schools and how it is higher then your normal co-ed high school. Throughout my research I noticed that females and males are more likely to tryout for after school activities or sports when attending a single sex school, due to the fact that they are more committed to there school opposed to their social life.
Corlies' Reseach: The research I conducted had to do with emotional and social development in students of single-sex education compared to those of co-ed education. I found a lot of information that also compared learning experiences (emotionally and socially) of boys and girls separately. I used this comparative information to give examples of why boys and girls should or should not be taught together. I found several articles that gave insightful information about specific examples of single-sex schools and also articles that gave information detailing the research conducted about single-sex schools. The basis of my presentation is 'How single-sex schools create healthy emotional and social development through 3 factors; Self-esteem, Performance, and Eliminating pressures.'
III. Group Project Overview:

1. Our group will start with a PowerPoint slide where we will define specific terms so that the class will understand our main points.
2. Next we will split the class according to gender and ask the class a few questions.
3. Once we have finished asking the set of questions to both genders separately. Then we will bring the whole class together and continue with our PowerPoint presentation explaining our different areas of research.
4. After we have finished with our slides we will reveal to the class how the questions that we first asked in separate groups and how their answers may or may not have supported our research.
5. Finally we will end with a question and answer session.
